Billy Dean Austin,
age 80, passed away June 14, 2022. He was born June 23, 1941, in Arkansas,
the son of Martha Marie (Haribson) Austin and Truman Park Austin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gene D Austin,
and is survived by his sister, Mary Ruth Austin. Billy was a resident of
Fayetteville, AR since 1998, and attended the First Assembly Church in
Fayetteville and the Gospel of Peace in Springdale.
When his family moved to Arlington, Texas, Billy was 5
years old. As a young man, he displayed a natural ability for art
and model construction. His work was often displayed by teachers and appreciated
by those around him. He built a scale model of a covered
wagon and a horse
drawn buggy. Both were built from materials he gathered around his
home. He was meticulous in his detailing, often remaking parts until the
wagon and buggy were perfect and authentic in every detail. He crafted
many other items including a sewing box, a working model of a guitar and
a wooden powder box with a luxurious finish. Pencil sketches soon
caught his eye and he tried his hand at that. His sketch of an 18
wheel tractor trailer was framed for others to enjoy.
After graduating from Arlington High School, Billy began
repairing watches and clocks for local jewelry stores. He had steady hands
and an eagle-like vision to see the tiny parts. His talent as a horologist
was sought out by many jewelers to repair and clean their client’s old
and priceless pieces.
In 1998, Billy relocated to Fayetteville Arkansas, to
join his brother, Gene. He worked at the Fayetteville Wal-Mart as a greeter
for 10 years.
Billy suffered from epilepsy throughout his entire life,
and it often prevented him from working outside his home. However, his
talent and craftsmanship as an artist always shone through. He had a love
for art, was intelligent, and always patient with people around him. His
creative works will always be with us, but he will be missed.
Billy will be interred alongside his Brother, Gene D.
Austin, in the family plot at Friendship Cemetery, in Springdale, AR.
